Uncle Ken's Reports
6/25/2021 - Uncle Ken reported listening to the Iowa Barnstormers on 1040 WHO from Des Moines, IA clear as a bell at 50,000 watts to his base in Coppell, TX.
6/26/2021- Picked up KDKA 1020 around 10:00 PM (Central) but was then blocked by KCKN, a Spanish religious station out of Roswell, NM.
6/27/2021- My goal is to identify and document as many 50,000 watt stations as possible using my Sangean radio. I will post a list shortly. NTA (North Texas Affiliate) is located in Coppell, TX at an altitude of 554 feet and just a few miles north of DFW Airport. In fact, part of the airport is in Coppell. Because of its location in the Southern Plains, many 5000 watt stations to the north are easily received.
7/12/21-Once again KFEQ 680 in St. Joseph, MO came in loud and clear even though it's 5000 watts. I enjoy these smaller stations because they still feature a lot of local programming.
7/14-2021-Picked up WWL 870 New Orleans last night which is another 50,000 watt clear channel. WWL used to be popular with truckers as they traveled Interstate 10 from Florida west to Texas. Probably not so much anymore since they play the usual syndicated shows. A lot of Americana has disappeared but so it goes.
7/26/2021-Around 10:00 PM Central Time, I picked up KNZZ 1100 broadcasting from Grand Junction, CO. KNZZ broadcasts at 50,000 during the day, 38,000 during critical hours, and 10,000 at night. Critical hours are two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset so at 10:00 the station was broadcasting at 10,000 watts. The format is conservative talk and news with some local programming. It also broadcasts BYU football and basketball. Grand Junction is 970 miles from Coppell with the Rockies in between. This is the first time I have listened to KNZZ and reception was good with little fading.
6/28/2021-I listened to the end of the Royals-Red Sox game on 680 KFEQ from St. Joseph, MO. This is a 5000 watt station but I get it most nights. For a 5000 station it has wide coverage.
